Musical Home Office

Location: Private

Designer Credits: Decorating Den Interiors

Project Overview:

Graffiti wallpaper covers the new ‘barn door’ entry to a home office for this millennial couple. Warm gray coordinates with the accent wall paper. The window-shading and openness of the metal and wood furnishings creates an inviting workspace. Guitars and wall art add texture and personality, blue carpet finishes the room.

Musical Home Office

Design Challenges

  • The room the client wanted to turn into a home office, was primarily used by their cats, and for miscellaneous storage.
  • Mysteriously, an exterior-type metal door had been used from the foyer to this room. The room also had a door leading into the garage. Funky crown had been added by a previous homeowner. All of which the client wanted removed.
  • They wanted an airy feel, not ultra-contemporary, rustic would be okay.
  • Functional requests included: a desk, a place for TV, book shelving, some place to put the mail, comfortable for him to work in 10-20 hours/week, and for her to pay household bills.
  • Minimal filing space as they have a filing cabinet elsewhere.

Design Solutions

  • A slab door on sliding black hardware was suggested for the new door for the office – covered in a graffiti patterned paper, which would create the look of art in the bare foyer. The client created a trim-less, Sheetrock opening, for the door opening – which allows for smooth operation of the door.
  • We chose the coordinating back-ground of the graffiti wallpaper to do a focal wall in the office. A warm gray was chosen for the other walls.
  • A rich blue colored carpet was selected – which draws your eye to the blue in the graffiti paper. The orange in the coppery wall art is a complementary accent to the blue, and is also present in the graffiti.
  • The writing desk creates an open feel, and the metal legs tie in nicely with the barn-door hardware!
  • The client walled off the door to the garage, as there is another door elsewhere in the house, and created a cat door with access to a closed-off litter box area built in the garage, for their two house-cats. Our wallpaper installer did an amazing job covering the trim of the cat door!
