Design Challenges

A new home presented this interior designer with an opportunity for a fresh start. Dated colors, including built in cabinets, dark coffered ceilings, and beige travertine floors did not match the desire for a welcoming, fresh family room for family gatherings and enjoyment of the golf course and lake views. The 20′ x 20′ room adjacent to the kitchen required properly scaled sofa and seating without blocking the views. In addition, window treatments to frame the view were desired. Ceiling light fixtures lacked an overall lighting scheme.

Design Solutions

Painting the walls gray with the trim and coffered ceiling a fresh, clean white gave the space an open fresh feeling. Built in cabinet doors and the mantle were replaced and painted for a streamlined finish. The biggest impact with painting and sealing the travertine flooring in a transparent white finish. Now that the envelope was perfect, it was time to fill the room. The interior designer started with a large tonal grey abstract rug in a soft chenille texture. This defined an expansive seating area including a transitional sofa in a no worry performance fabric with a linen like texture. Soft nubby fabric on a modern sleek recliner, along with two chair and ottoman combinations assure comfort for the family and their visitors. Textures in the upholstery fabrics provide variety with a relaxed and welcoming impression. A variety of small tables with lamps provide flexible arrangement of furniture, along with balanced lighting for the room. The view is framed by side panels in a subtle pattern on painted wooden rods with rings. The circular pattern on the drapes, along with the curved lines of the upholstered cocktail table and ottoman offset the straight lines in the room. This room is now a favorite space for this family.
